Is it a bee or hummingbird?

09-Jul-2009

I love watching our Butterfly Garden here at SML State Park. I never know what I'm going to see flying, feeding or just taking a well deserved respite.
Check out this Hummingbird Moth (Hemaris thysbe). I actually helped settle an argument a couple was having after spying one of these guys flitting around our Discovery Center. The husband was certain it was a bee of some kind and he was bound to get stung by it. The wife assured her husband it was a harmless hummingbird & to get closer so she could see if it was a Ruby-throat. Imagine their surprise when I explained they were observing a very unique moth!
