Limping predator20-Jan-2009
On of my wildlife goals for 2009 was to view bobcat, so imagine my surprise and delight when I got to see one this morning. It started with my dog voicing a low woof (an unusual event, he's a lover not a sighter ;-) which alerted me to something unusual. I ran to his location and looked. Soon I saw movement on the hill-side, and then the complete view. The distinctive posture of the bobcat. S/he begin slinking down the hill (skirting my house) and likely following the smell of Turkey. I was unable to get a photo but watched it for a long time as it prowled down the hill and deep into the draw. Unfortunately the animal demonstrated a limp; one of it's back legs had a problem. I hope that it recovers soon (soon enough for a good meal.) The squirrels were shouting at it when it passed them. They didn't trust it not to still be able to snag them. UPDATE: Seems this is a well known local called "tri-bob", a happy/healthy bob-cat w/ a missing left rear leg. Been around for years.

Awesome. I also found some tracks (and photographed them) when up at Montgomery Pass. Seemed like lion to me (too big even for Lynx.) I'll post those photos also. (Will the WRV spring potluck be announced on NatureNet, or have I already missed a notice?)
