Golden-mantled ground squirrels can be found in woodlands, rocky hills and mountains and fields near the edge of forests. They live throughout Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Utah and Nevada and parts of California, Montana, Arizona and New Mexico.

The golden-mantled ground squirrel stuffs its cheeks with food before returning to its den. This allows the squirrel to store food for winter and it keeps the paws free for running from predators.
