Anas platyrhynchos (scientific)

In the winter, some mallards migrate south to the Southeast, Texas, the Caribbean and Arizona, while the summer migration takes them to Alaska. The rest of the country has year-round residents. Look for them in ponds, lakes and urban parks. Listening for a female mallard may be easier than spotting one, because females call out the familiar 'quack' associated with ducks. Male mallards are silent except when fighting another male.
