How to see American Kestrel

These birds are amazing hunters. Typically they are to been seen hovering (tail splayed for balance, wings actively holding it up) so they can look down for rodents and invertebrates. More recently (and in places like the USA) where power/telephone lines are available, the Kestrel saves it's energy by sitting on the wires. Look for them on the wires; while many raptors will sit atop the poles, Kestrels are the main raptors seen sitting on the wires.

On cliffs and hillside, Kestrels take advantage of a headwind in order to reduce the need for hovering. They ride these winds maintaining their position and searching for prey.
