The great blue heron can be found all over North America, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The farther north you are, the more likely they will be migratory summer residents. Look for them near ponds, shores and lakes. When Wildlife Watching in Florida it is possible to see a great blue heron that isn't blue at all. A white morph (a color variety within a species) exists almost exclusively in Florida and can be easily confused with a great egret. How to see Great Blue Heron
Great Blue Heron hunt by stealth; standing almost-motionless in the water, looking for prey (fish, frogs and more) to come along, unaware. Once ready it lashes out with it's sharp beak to capture it's prey. Look for Heron standing by waterways, in reeds (disguising its silhouette.) Heron are very large birds, watch them fly overhead with slow wing beats (indicative of a large bird.) the long legs are often visible straight out behind. |
