Cardinals live year-round in the eastern half of the continental United States. Look for them in woodlands, forest edges, parks, suburban backyards, bird feeders and shrubs. Both male and female northern cardinals sing. Male northern cardinals will sing to defend and mark their territory, while females sing to communicate to the male from their nest.
