Snowy Owl

Difficulty Popularity Places
UncommonLowLocalized
Colorado Missouri

Look for snowy owls year round in northern Alaska and during the winter in southern Alaska, New England and states bordering Canada. They like to hunt in open fields with nearby tall perches, such as trees or buildings.

When the lemming population crashes (as it does cyclically) the snowy owls are pushed south into the lower 48 in order to find prey. Once there, they'll stay there until march and return to the Arctic to breed.

How to see Snowy Owl

The winter of 2011/2012 has been a '50 year irruption', providing the biggest influx of Snowy Owls in the lower 48 in many observers lives. Look for large white birds atop power poles and/or hunting low over fields at dawn and dusk. As a tundra species these birds are comfortable low to the ground, even sitting alone out in the middle of a flat field.
